In the Palm of Papa’s Hand

Donna Godwin 2013

In the palm of Papa’s hand

was a hollowed out place…

unexplored territory-

a cave of sorts.

Surrendered, sacred, secure.

Devoid of life and matter

oblivious to shape or form.

With an ache

the sound of loneliness rose

into the mysterious abyss of darkness.

The sound was heard and captured!

The wind stirred in response

calling forth the breath of life.

In the gust of a word

light erupted

darkness fled

life poured forth.

Day had dawned.

Seeds gave birth.

Destiny had arrived!

Creator God … Elohim!

Holy Spirit

Giver of Life

Lover of Souls

Holy! Holy! Holy!

Is the Lord God Almighty!

Who was and is and is to come!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The Cave of New Beginnings

alcohol ink Mary

I have been listening to the song

‘Overflow” by Nic and Rachel Billman.

My heart is full….

The first few lines of the song go like this…

“ I am a vessel…you are the river,

come and fill me now I pray.

Broken I am and broken I come.

Mold me and make me as you desire…”

Mold me and make me as you desire.

The season of Advent is upon us like a mother pregnant with child.

Mary comes to mind.

It is a time of new beginnings.  It is a season of new life in a land that sometimes seems barren and void.  When winter comes upon this earth I often groan and move inward to my cave of darkness.  It is a season that I have not embraced.  The sun seems to disappear and the world feels dark and chaotic, much how I perceive the universe pre- Genesis.

Plainly put- I do not like winter at all.

I’ve been asking the Lord about all of that and I can feel the prayers of friends going up as we discuss things like the cave of solitude, darkness, devotion, reverence, holiness, and the awe and wonder of winter.  I’ve started to see with new eyes and this year I am getting excited about winter and what the Lord wants to reveal to us through the world around us.  It is a time when we slow down, listen and spend time with the Lord just being still.

Elijah shows us how to do it.

1 Kings 19:11-13

11 “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

A gentle whisper from the Lord God Almighty.

I believe that Mary heard the gentle whisper of the Lord God Almighty as he called her to attention and filled her belly with purpose, wisdom, revelation and knowledge.  Her belly was filled with Life and He was the One that would bring salvation to those who chose (and choose) to embrace Him. She carried our eternal destiny, our new beginning, deep inside of her being, like a river that flows from within the depths of the earth.

This song…

it says…

“ I am a vessel, you are the river, come and fill me now I pray…”

Mary was filled with the Giver of Life-the river Himself.  She was filled with the overflow of life and joy unspeakable.  Is it no wonder she sang a song of praise to all of creation?  She was carrying the river of life deep within her womb.

When I began to listen to this song,

that’s all I could see was Mary…carrying Jesus-the Light of the world in her belly.

Jesus tells us in John 7:37-38

“Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!

38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare,

‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”

I didn’t know what was going to come out of the ink bottle and I know the spirit of the Lord was upon me as I created.  I felt such emotion and love rising from my own belly and my eyes filled with tears, several times, as I too pondered what the Lord was speaking to my heart.

“ There is still healing to come, Donna. “

…more tears…holy weeping comes and goes in these times of worship through creativity….

I need to take time to drink from the river….

He is calling me to the cave.  He wants me to embrace all of the seasons-not just the ones I like.  There is a plan and purpose for each one and I should look UP and see the river that is flowing from heaven to earth.  ALL OF IT!  He wants me to sing praises, to worship and just be still and listen.  It is a time of reflection and hearing His still small voice.  To look inward with His eyes and not my own.  To see what He sees and not what I don’t.

To be molded and made into what He desires and not the world.

To let go of any and all fear…

Isn’t this what Mary did?  She had a tender and willing heart that was filled with love for her Father.

In the painting- this is Mary standing in the “cave of new beginnings.”   It could be anyone really- you or me.  She is wide eyed with wonder and pregnant with purpose.  She is overflowing with life, light and glory!

She is calling us to embrace every season just as she did, with devotion, honor, trust and reverence to the Lord.  She is saying, “ Lift up your head and raise your eyes to the heavens!  Look up and see the Love that came down and filled us to overflowing! Drink deep!  Drink often! “

“ I am a vessel

you are the river

come and fill me now I pray….”

Advent means “the coming or arrival, especially of something extremely important.”

As we look forward to His arrival in our lives, I bless your season of Advent with a fresh outlook and outpouring from the Lord of Heaven and Earth!

“ Your Kingdom come…Your will be done…”

on earth as it is heaven…”

Hi! I received a gift in the mail of a cd called SOARING. It is written and composed by John Tussey.

John lives in Hawaii and is a very anointed musician/composer/artist.  His music carries great healing from the Lord.  I have one cd and now I have another to add to my collection.  The first one brought healing to my knee and it seems that the Lord has brought an increase to me through the second one.  Glory Glory Hallelujah!

The following pieces are very small.   ( 2” x 3”)  A friend of mine told me not long ago that the Lord would have me sitting with Him doing small pieces of art.  She was right!  Another friend told me that the Lord would show me new ways to create more faster, and this is it.  ( I have so many pictures in my head all the time and it’s always been like that but lately it has increased greatly in every area from mixed media to sketching to painting ( and writing)  and now this new thing with ink. )

alcohol ink psalm 427

I’ve scanned and enlarged them and added scripture to them. ( see below)  I started listening to the song, “ Fountain of Joy”  as I started this and as you can see it looks like a heavenly waterfall!   ( Which is one of the songs on the cd. )  I have this “thing” about water falls…there are two in particular where I have met God through the water, the sound, and the experience.  This is why this cd speaks to my spirit.  On one hand it is very soothing and on the other it makes my spirit jump with excitement whenever I hear it!

Alcohol ink wedding day

I do not plan what I am going to do and when I sit down to create the spirit flows and I follow the leading of the Lord.  I drop ink onto my paper and then I begin to move it around with my breath.  I don’t use a brush-I use my breath and sometimes I use a qtip/cotton ball to lift the ink off the paper.  It’s quite amazing to me and it can get intense.  Now that I think about it, this is quite interesting because three or four times now I have laid my brushes down as an offering back to the Lord.  Now He has me breathing as a brush….hmmmm….

…I hear these words in my head…” there’s more Donna…”  haha

I thank the Lord for all the He is showing me as I create.  It’s all for HIS glory!

I’m learning with Him.  It’s the only way.

Psalm 42:7

Deep called to deep at the noise of your waterfalls;
all your massive waves surged over me.

In this one there is a portal in the falls…it beckons you to come a little closer…get wet…jump in!  Standing in or at the base of a waterfall sounds like a roar and I love it.  Someday I will get to Hawaii and see the beautiful waterfalls there…Up to the left corner there’s a blue figure-almost as if the arm is raised and waving and saying, “ come in…”  You see that there’s more but you can’t see what…it’s mysterious and deep.  The water is richly intense in color and depth as it falls to pound on the earth.

Her waves have taken you under….

DEEP speaks to DEEP…

alcohol ink psalm 427

This second one started as I listened to “Through the clouds” except I didn’t realize that until I began to see clouds forming and I looked at the song title and just laughed! Smile  I sat with this one for a lot longer…breathing, blowing, spritzing and moving it all around until I got this.  I realized it was an opening in the clouds, like a pulling back of the veil.  I kept hearing the word “home.”  Yes…home is where the heart is…where His heart is and one day where ours will be… fully and wholly in the Presence of the Lord.

Holy! Holy! Holy!

As I looked I saw a hand pulling back the cloud, or lifting it open.  Can you see it?  There is also the start of the shape of a cross in the clouds.  I feel like I can walk right in.  My mind went to Revelation 19:1-9

After this I heard what sounded like a huge crowd in heaven. They said,

“Hallelujah! The salvation and glory and power of our God!
2 His judgments are true and just,
because he judged the great prostitute,
who ruined the earth by her whoring,
and he exacted the penalty for the blood of his servants
from her hand.”

3 Then they said a second time,

“Hallelujah! Smoke goes up from her forever and always.”

4 The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshipped God, who is seated on the throne, and they said, “Amen. Hallelujah!”

5 Then a voice went out from the throne and said,

“Praise our God, all you his servants,
and you who fear him, both small and great.”

6 And I heard something that sounded like a huge crowd, like rushing water and powerful thunder. They said,

“Hallelujah! The Lord our God, the Almighty,
exercised his royal power!
7 Let us rejoice and celebrate, and give him the glory,
for the wedding day of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
8 She was given fine, pure white linen to wear,
for the fine linen is the saints’ acts of justice.”

9 Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Favored are those who have been invited to the wedding banquet of the Lamb.” He said to me, “These are the true words of God.” 10 Then I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said, “Don’t do that! I’m a servant just like you and your brothers and sisters who hold firmly to the witness of Jesus. Worship God! The witness of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy!”

Alcohol ink wedding day

These two pieces go together.

Verse 6 says it all:

And I heard something that sounded like a huge crowd, like rushing water and powerful thunder. They said,

“Hallelujah! The Lord our God, the Almighty,
exercised his royal power!

Rushing water, royal power and coming on the clouds…… is an invitation for the Bride to be ready…to receive her ultimate healing……..

1 Cor 2:9

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard,
and no mind has imagined
what God has prepared
for those who love him.”

PS: as I sat and pondered this again I can see a figure walking away from the entrance to the way Home…

and I see faces in the clouds…

I also heard angels singing in John’s cd…

how about you?

how do these pieces speak to you?

Feel free to share as the Lord leads…

many blessings,

Smile  ..and to my friend who sent me this gift…thank you!  I bless you with MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The First Noel

Silent Night

Away in a Manger

At the edge of the cave…

This is the new me in art form.  The Lord has placed many people in my path to whisper His Truth into my ears-ears which by the way, are physically unable to hear at full capacity, yet I can hear better than I ever have. PRAISE THE LORD!   I have prayed for the physical healing of my wayward ears and have received healing in the form of a spiritual awakening from the Lover of my soul.

I have a friend who excitedly says, “ Donna, there’s more!!!”

She’s so right.

Psalm 5110 heart

I do not understand the ways of God, but I do know that He is doing all of these things inside my heart and through my hands.  This is HIS testimony of how HE LOVES when we LET GO.

This morning , as I stand at the edge of the cave and listen for His still, small voice,  my heart sings praises to My King and My God for His enduring love and faithfulness to keep whispering Truth into my ears…and to keep dipping my heart into heaven’s hues.  My heart weeps in humble gratitude at the depth of love that I feel coming from Him.  He is my Lover and I am His.

Psalm 65

Centering prayer is a form of setting your mind on a word, a thought, color, scripture and then just “going there” with the Lord.  Most folks who know me know that I have a great love for creation and all of her colors.  All things flow from the center of His heart and I want to keep my mind there as much as possible.  Doing this centering prayer really helps me get my thoughts in order for the day.  I have started to add this in an art form as a daily part of my morning prayers.  As I create, dribble, splatter and breath I am creating a piece of sacred prayer art.  I watch the flow and movement of the medium and let the spirit of the Lord speak into me through the colors, shapes, feel, texture of each piece.  No two are alike- ever.  The cool thing abut this is that it takes my mind totally out of it. The only thing I am controlling are the colors as I listen and respond to His voice.  It amazes me at how closely related the pictures become to my prayers.   We become ONE in the creation of the piece.

Every morning I commune with the Lord and read certain scriptures, prayers and a Psalm.    I have a little bag that has all the Psalms listed in it on slips of paper and each day I pick a slip of paper out of the bag and read the Psalm that is listed there.  This way it is not me picking it, but the spirit of the Lord.  Today’s Psalm was 65.

It blew me away.  Here is the first verse…

to you even SILENCE is PRAISE.

Promises made to you are KEPT-

you listen to PRAYER-

and ALL living things come to you.

…even SILENCE is praise…

There are times when I cannot utter a word out loud but my heart is screaming from the inside out…mercy, faith, trust, compassion, more mercy, Lord, pour it out.  I am learning what contemplative prayer is and that I have really been doing this form of prayer for a very, very long time.  I just didn’t realize it “had a name.”  LOL

I received a gift in the mail this week from my friend who is an author. ( Breakfast with God- Maureen Tuohy)   It is her first book and I have been so blessed by the words I am reading in it.  I see how she and I are “on the same page” and that God is affirming many things through her writing to me- writing that she began a long time ago!  I see her stories as part of what is written on my scroll for my life here and now.  This morning I read about her experience with the Nuns as a child and how the nuns affected her prayer life.  She also shared her great love for one Nun in particular.

In all my years I never imagined that I would develop an affection for nuns, but I have.  It started out by reading about the life of Mother Teresa through a book of photography loaned to me by a friend many years ago.  Since then I have read about St. Francis and St. Teresa of Avila and I adore their complete and total devotion to doing the work of the Lord.

Caves, kitchens, castles and slums.  Wherever the Lord called them to- they went.  This is the sold out kind of love that I crave.

Devotion to our Creator.

Not long ago, I asked myself, I wonder what it would be like to be a nun?  I’ve never even met one.  Well, it seems that the Lord as answered that prayer in a most mysterious way.  I was given a gift of going on a retreat fro my birthday.  I had originally asked to go to an art museum in Philly, but the Lord always knows best and He answered that with this retreat.

Next month I will be attending a retreat at St. Francis Center for renewal in Bethlehem, PA..  I have been invited to spend 3 days with a lovely group of nuns-none of whom I know-but all of whom I will come to know and undoubtedly fall in love with.   There will be silence, but it will not be deafening.  There will be prayer and a lot of it.  There will be much pondering, contemplating and devotion to the Lord.  All of these things will allow these ears and this heart to seek and know the Living God in a new and exciting way.

I am very excited!

We will be in the town of Bethlehem, PA. which began as a Moravian settlement.  I am quite fond of the Moravians and Count Zinzendorf.  In case you didn’t know- Zinzendorf met Jesus in  painting and had a “mystical” experience and came to give his life over to the Lord.  The painting is titled” Ecce Homo” or ‘ Behold the Man.”

Under the painting are these words:

“This have I suffered for you; now what will you do for me?”

I imagine I will be asking myself this same question over the weekend as I ponder what God is speaking to me.

I love the Moravians.  They were sold out prayer warriors.

I met them when I went to Slovakia in 2009.  I met them when I visited Moravian Falls a few months ago and I will meet them again in December.  There seems to be a theme here and that is to live a sold out life of prayer in everything that I do…

He calls us to Him

in the silence

in praise

in creativity

in fellowship

in creation.

This morning He called me to Him through a Psalm…

He said, “ come in…walk this way…and follow Me…

a little deeper…a little closer…just you and Me…”

So I did.  As I created,  I walked through that covenant blood again and again and again.  My tears rolled down my cheeks as I cried out to the Lord.

Some folks have shared that they can’t see what I see in these pieces and quite frankly-these are not about what I see-but about what He shows me as I do them.  They are not to be understood, but to be experienced.  Just as Zinzendorf had a mystical experience with a painting, so do I.  It is mysterious and moody and the Lord rises up “oh so mighty”  in my heart.  While there are no words my heart shouts in colors with JOY and breaks out in the spirit in song singing Hallellujah! Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!

Psalm 65

God of Zion, to you even silence is praise.
Promises made to you are kept—
2 you listen to prayer—
and all living things come to you.
3 When wrongdoings become too much for me,
you forgive our sins.
4 How happy is the one you choose to bring close,
the one who lives in your courtyards!
We are filled full by the goodness of your house,
by the holiness of your temple.

5 In righteousness you answer us,
by your awesome deeds,
God of our salvation—
you, who are the security
of all the far edges of the earth,
even the distant seas.
6 You establish the mountains by your strength;
you are dressed in raw power.
7 You calm the roaring seas;
calm the roaring waves,
calm the noise of the nations.
8 Those who dwell on the far edges
stand in awe of your acts.
You make the gateways
of morning and evening sing for joy.
9 You visit the earth and make it abundant,
enriching it greatly
by God’s stream, full of water.
You provide people with grain
because that is what you’ve decided.
10 Drenching the earth’s furrows,
leveling its ridges,
you soften it with rain showers;
you bless its growth.
11 You crown the year with your goodness;
your paths overflow with rich food.
12 Even the desert pastures drip with it,
and the hills are dressed in pure joy.
13 The meadowlands are covered with flocks,
the valleys decked out in grain—
they shout for joy;
they break out in song!

Centering prayer

I did this piece to get my mind centered around the covenant heart of God the Father and the life blood of Jesus the Son.   The Life blood  runs through our veins bringing light and life into our beings.  It fills all the dark places and calms all the fears.  It’s like a shout in the darkness that brings healing into the atmosphere with one mighty rushing breath…

It reverberates, resonates, and brings order to chaos, drawing us to our Creator.

He is my center.

He is the breath in my lungs, the oxygen in my cells and the beating of my heart.

He is the rejoicing, rushing, river of life Who runs through me.

Together, we stand as One.

He is mine and I am HIS.

Forever and always,  d.

Flying by FAITH

Releasing Love

It’s a chilly and beautiful morning at the Crossroads!  I woke up this morning with “seeds” and prayer paintings on my mind.  The Lord reminded me of a painted prayer that a friend and I did together back in June and today it has been answered.  He also brought back to my mind a sketch and a dream, from 6 months ago, of a seed sprouting and flourishing from where it was planted.  Then a few months ago He sent someone here with a bag of fresh picked lima beans and a message.  As the beans were being shelled at my kitchen table I saw how God would cause this ministry to grow.

Faith takes many acts, steps and words spoken.  It is active, not passive.

The LORD is so faithful and true when we move into Him and take the first step.  We are never alone in this journey.  Every step is walking into our future with God.  The future that He planned for us a long time ago.  It is often a mystical walk that is filled with dreams and visions for the future.

It is one that we don’t often understand and are afraid to say out loud for fear of being ridiculed by the world.  Our future with Him is our birthright.

nest 2

I will be 52 in a few weeks.  I have lived over half my life and most of that has been trying to figure out who I am and where I am going.  I’ve heard a lot of negative things about who the world thinks that I am and quite frankly, that’s just poo.

It’s not true.

As a woman who is a daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend, grandmother and an artist, I carry a very tender heart in this flesh.  I care deeply for people and about people and it is often hard to express or even share those feelings.  As a mother who see’s the world through an artist’s eyes, I know that my purpose is to show mercy however I can, to be mercy wherever I can, and to love everyone with all of Jesus.

Isn’t this what Mary did?

She loved us with everything she had and all of who she was.  Think about it.

Do we even think of Mary as “Mom?”

I’ve been seeing her with new eyes lately and there are days when I think she is right here with me whispering in my ear

” just love them Donna, love them with all of Jesus.  I did and you will.  He came so that you might have life and light.   Show them where the Light is and who the Life is.  He’s my Son and Your Savior.  Take them by the hand and show them in mercy. Live it, speak it, pray it, paint it, dance in it, sing it.  I sang…do you remember?  Let me sing it to you again….

“Oh, how my soul praises the Lord.
47 How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!
48 For he took notice of his lowly servant girl,
and from now on all generations will call me blessed.
49 For the Mighty One is holy,
and he has done great things for me.
50 He shows mercy from generation to generation
to all who fear him.
51 His mighty arm has done tremendous things!
He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.
52 He has brought down princes from their thrones
and exalted the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away with empty hands.
54 He has helped his servant Israel
and remembered to be merciful.
55 For he made this promise to our ancestors,
to Abraham and his children forever.”

Releasing Love

Mary carried the song of blessing in her heart and the destiny of the world in her womb.  God planted a seed there that would flourish, spring forth and bring salvation to the world.  Mary was filled with purity, passion and purpose.

So are you.

Some of you don’t know it or have forgotten it.  We get tied up in the world and we forget who we are and where we came from.

He created us in HIS image.  What does that image look like, sound like and feel like?

Go to your bathroom mirror and take a look.

It’s YOU.

It’s YOU.

It’s YOU.

There is a plan and purpose inside of you that God has placed there.  Feel your heartbeat.  That is the LORD Jesus drumming His plan for you deep in your spirit for you to hear and come into harmony with HIM.  I encourage you to lift up your heart song to the Lord and ask Him to send you people to help you, to open your eyes and ears to see and hear and know HIS voice.  Ask HIM for clarity, for visions, dreams and revelations.  Seek HIM with everything that is in you, with every ounce of your being,  and He will be faithful to show you His face.

His promises are true and He is forever faithful….

ask Mary…she knows all about walking by faith~

Now…as God begins to break open that shell…

you will find your wings,

you will shake yourself off…

you will discover that release is here…

and that you are FREE…

to fly into your freedom with purpose!

now FLY….

into HIS glory….

Healing Tree Art Workshop- “ Deep Waters”

Today I held the second art workshop.  The first one was many, many months ago with 2 beautiful women at our kitchen table.  Today I had 4 beautiful women in the studio.  Some of us knew the other but we didn’t all know each other.   This morning, as I was praying,  I felt like the Lord was telling me that this time was one of fellowship, unity, and sharing His heart with one another through creativity.

So we did.

The Lord spoke to each of us in different ways and it was absolutely amazing to me to watch Him unfold His heart in each piece.

Here is the group….

A mighty band of prayer warriors!

( They are glowing with His Light!!)

and here are their pieces….

Deep speaks to deep.

First UMC –Hillsville

This one is a testimony of how a visitor to our church has experienced the welcoming love of Jesus Christ through our congregation.    It was breathtaking to hear her testimony of feeling loved and welcomed by First Church.  Glory to GOD!!!

Absolutely beautiful!

Thank you Jesus for being here in each one of us and for reminding us of Mary through the rose petals in the water.

Your love is such a  tender love…

We have been blessed by your beauty, mercy, love, compassion and peace in each other.  Your unifying Presence was felt by each of us as you pulled us into your heart.  I am blessed beyond measure at what you are revealing through Your creative heart and hands.

We are forever Yours…

1469838_10151791401072083_1490037283_n (1)

The Lord has me sitting with Him, the sketchbook, and pen.  I can’t sleep and I can’t think about anything but His love.  He has permeated my bones and I woke up HOT!

He woke me up at 3:18 am.

I was directed to these scriptures…Smile

Psalm 31:8

and have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy;
you have set my feet in a broad place.

Proverbs 3:18

( Wisdom)

She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her;
those who hold her fast are called happy.

I sketched a couple of things while listening to His heart from my nest of covers.

This is one of them.  After some time listening, I realized that this is the bridal gown of pearls.

I talked about my little friend,  Pearl, yesterday…she’s a gem and a jewel and every time I hear the word or name PEARL I see her eyes opened wide with wonder as she discovered who her Jesus was inside of her.  So precious, holy and true.  A gem in the bridal gown of Christ.

This spilled out of the pen this morning…there are many pearls on the gown that flow from our Forever Love…each is a gem in the body of Christ…each one starting as a grain of sand and being raised by another who has been given wisdom, knowledge and grace.  Each needing the other and not one standing alone.  Over time and with much tossing, turning and pressure, a treasure is released into the Kingdom.

This treasure is you…

…and….sometimes we don’t know our worth because we have been tossed around on the ocean floor of life. It is until the tumbling stops and the pressure is released that we can be freed.  Freedom comes by the Great hand of our Creator , Elohim.   He lifts our scarred and sometimes broken shells, and His hand tenderly wipes away our tears and pain.  He gently pries open our hearts and releases what He placed inside of us long ago.  That tiny grain of sand has become a beautiful pearl, a gem that has been placed on the bridal gown of Christ.  One by one, the treasures are gathered to await the arrival of their groom.

The day is nearing and the time is closing in quickly.  There are many more gems to be raised, to be found, to be released and to be seen and heard.  They have a voice in the Kingdom and that voice is HIS.

Light. Life. Radiance.

You were made to SHINE bright for HIM.

You have worth and you ARE a treasure in the arms of Christ….

He loves you so much…
