Details- Day 10 P &P

Zech. 4:10

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”

Zechariah 4

The Lord keeps bringing this scripture to mind.

Do not despise the day of small beginnings.

In order to get someplace we must take certain steps to get there.  God is in the alignment business.  We cannot skip over step one and go right to step 20.  Beginning’s are important and so is alignment. Our plumb line should be vertical from the heart of God to ours.  No twists and turns, just a straight shot- from the atmosphere of heaven to our earthly residence that we call home.

Psalm 147

The LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

He is my hope-always and forever.

I have been pondering having an art show.

At first I thought, “who would come and why?”

Then I thought, “well, if you don’t try, you’ll never know.”

Then, “ and if no one comes, then at least you tried.”

Then I hear, “ oh you are so silly-everyone would come and why not? “

dogs two

I don’t think God would keep putting the thought there and not give me the vision to see it through.

Then I thought, “ I could do it here, here,  or here.”  ( many different places)

Then this morning, as I have been sitting here looking over the details throughout scripture, ( Oh those Chronicles and all those scribes!)  my life, the details of GOD IN my life and the details in the art I create, I began to ponder about having an art show right here in my home.

Then the thoughts begin again : “ who do you think you are?  This isn’t an art gallery you know and you have no idea of what you are doing…it’s not big enough, how are you going to do that, etc., etc..”

It’s good to ask questions, but don’t let the questions stop you from doing what God has been whispering to you for months and months.

Here’s the thing…after I saw the Healing Tree under the pine trees at Brenda Harmon’s house- ( and isn’t that just like God to show us things through other people?)  I’ve been seeing the artwork dotted around our back yard and people milling about, asking questions, talking, laughing and in fellowship with each other.   I even see my friend and her band, Miracle-Made- singing over it all.  I see kids painting at the picnic table and jumping around and having fun.

  I couldn’t dream this up.

But God can.

When I step back and think about how an event right here at home could affect my own community- my heart goes spastic.  I don’t have to go to Timbuktu to DO something-the place to do it is right here.  I’ve been thinking about how busy we are and how we don’t even know our neighbors anymore and how shameful that is.  We live in rural America-we SHOULD know our neighbors.   The opportunities to minister right here at home are endless.

My heart leaps.

Psalm 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.

But wait….

                       There’s more…

God has brought many creative people into my life this past year and it is for a reason.  I long to create, pray and praise the Lord with each of them. So today I am adding to my prayers about when and where to do just that.

A retreat of sorts…

God will reveal it in time…in the meantime..I have to get busy on the details of the beginning of an art show right here in the back yard…

There is much work to be done.  Please join me in prayer as I prepare my heart, my home and the art that God has given me to share.  It is not mine to keep…it never has been and never will be….

A treasure only blesses others when it is opened and shared….

Matthew 6:21 – For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

…and God is the treasure hidden deep in my heart.  He comes out through the bristles of the brush and speaks through His colors of life…

may you find the colors of eternity in your world today….

blessings as you create!

James 4:8

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

A Blessing- Day 8 GLORY to GOD!

We have been blessed to be a blessing!

This morning I made this yard banner.  The Lord has told me that He can use anything to breathe a blessing into another person’s life.  Color, shape, line and form are part of these things.  He continues to nudge me to paint out of the lines and to come to the paint with the eyes and mind of a child.  So I have.

Isaiah 12:6

“Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion,

for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”

Painting under the steeple

When I worked with the kids at Independence UMC last week I told them the only rule was to have fun and create!   So we did.  This is our hand tree.  Every person has a handprint on the tree!  The tree trunk has the river of life flowing from it.  The tree represents Christ.  Each hand is a person ( could be anyone)  in the body of Christ .  People are FRUIT!  God plants the seeds, seeds grow and beautiful things come to life!  These beautiful things are your children First Indy!  They are princes and princesses of the God of all Creation!  Thank you for sharing them with me!  The little hearts are the love of God that covers us all!  I had so much fun as we celebrated God’s creation through art!

Stop by First UMC in Independence, VA- it’s the church in the big curve.  Ask for Pastor Terri-she will greet you with a smile and hug and show you around!  Take a look at the artwork the kids created and give God a hand clap of praise!!!!

Isaiah 55:12 says this:

You will live in joy and peace.
The mountains and hills will burst into song,
and the trees of the field will clap their hands!

If you or your church would like to do a project with your kids through art, please contact me at

It would be an honor to meet you and work with you!

In Christ’s amazing LOVE….

Joy for your journey,

PS:  I stopped by a friend’s house and she wanted to see the painting that the children did …

( you see, I didn’t know it- but she had just been asked to work with the children at her church…..isn’t God good?)

this is what she said on FB that evening:

My friend , Donna, visited, and we talked about the Lord, prayed for Rick’s tests tomorrow and for healing, shared stories, laughed, cried and prayed for hands to serve the Lord. We looked at pictures and after I had the experience of Holy Spirit filled tears earlier in the day, next came Holy Spirit filled goose bumps as Donna Godwin pulled out a picture from her trunk and to me I saw the hands of God holding back the Red Sea. God is granting a safe passage from here to the other side to all who are willing to accept the free gift of God’s grace, not of works lest any man would ever boast.

Thank you Lord for the best day.

( Donna Cato)

Thank you kids….and Lord…you are amazing!  All glory, honor and praise to you!

Day 7 of P & P

Well, I’ve skipped a few days of blogging, but here I am again. LOL

It’s been an interesting day considering I was awakened at 3 am after having preached about the Lord’s Watch on Sunday.  Ha!  You always live out your sermon week to week!

So my day has looked like this: 3 am- prayer, coffee, painting, prayer, coffee, prayer, painting, kids to school and back to painting.  It’s just nuts is all I can say.  I worked on the kids project, then a prayer painting, and tonight I have experimented with flag / painting/ making.

Pentecost flag.

pentecost flag

My neighbor gave me this huge roll of vinyl so I am putting it to use by making some flags for the yard.  Like I said, it’s an experiment.  I’m not sure how they will hold up in the weather and time will tell!

Angels in whirlwinds.

I have a bigger studio now yet I still have no room.  How does that happen?  Maybe more projects?  LOL

blessing paint

Anyway- I’m tired.  Heading to bed-finally.

Hope you have a nice night and that I have sweet dreams and a rest filled sleep! LOL

Blessings, glory, honor and praises!

God is amazing!

Independence 2013

This is SOOOO me….

Artists make linear thinkers nervous….true that!  Not on purpose-but that’s just the way it is…

Free spirit vs nerd.  God made us all one way or the other and He loves each of us equally.  As an artist, I have found how hard it IS to fit in.  I can relate to this video so clearly.  Music is heard and played in most all churches everywhere…but what about visual art?

It is being used more and more and in my own experience I have been told by others how visual art has moved their heart to see God, receive God and hear God.  It is a powerful tool that the Lord has gifted many people with.  Some people don’t even know the gift lies within them.  That’s one of the things I love to do- pull that gift out of people and show them how to use it for God and then watch them take off and fly with their newly found discovery!  It is the joy of my heart-to watch other people walk into their destiny-whether it is art or something else.

A few weeks ago I asked a man in my congregation if he would preach one Sunday for me.  I’ve been encouraging him for some time now.  I saw the gift that was hidden within him –he has a teacher’s heart.   He accepted the offer right away and I was excited for God, for him, and for the church!  I didn’t get to hear him, but other people called me and told me what a wonderful job he did!  I knew he could do it!  I gave thanks to the Lord for his willing heart to try.  That’s what God is after- our willingness to “get out of our box” and try something new.

So right now, I thank all of you wonderful people who helped me get out of my box.  I know that I make some people nervous and they don’t know what to do with me, but that’s just the way it is.   I make myself nervous sometimes- so don’t feel like you are alone!   haha!

The wonderful Count Zinzendorf was a radical man chasing after God and people persecuted him because he was so graphic in his preaching.  In case you didn’t know it- he received his salvation looking at a painting of Jesus.  It is said that when he preached he encouraged people to visualize Christ’s wounds and he would explain them in great detail.  He encouraged people to use their imaginations and “enter into the wounds and drink from them.”

This is what art does for me-it allows me to “enter in” and “drink….”

The more I drink, the more I want…like an alcoholic who needs more booze- I need more of Christ.  What about you?

Have you had a drink today?

I invite you to “enter in…” and partake of the glorious cup of Christ…

Caravaggio’s “Doubting Thomas”

I love this scene………

Trust, honor and obey

I gave this painting away today.  It was covered with prayer and anointing oil.

The Spirit Lives

It went from my hands into the hands of someone who was going to visit residents in the nursing home.  I went to Wal Mart. LOL

While in Wally world I get a phone call.
It was from the person I gave the painting to.  She was so excited over what happened that she couldn’t wait to talk to me!   She decided to take the painting into the nursing home with her.  She had a friend there who is an artist.

She gets inside and goes to a birthday party in the dining room. Someone wanted to know what she was carrying.  So she showed them.  They were taken by the colors and the flowers and rainbow and such.  They came close, they touched it and one person led to another, which led to another, and before long she was heading down the hall showing everyone who wanted to see it.  ( Over 70 people…)

She comes to a room where a woman is yelling, “ Help me, Help me, I wanna die.”    The woman has a lot of emotional issues and yells a lot.  So my friend shows the woman the painting.  The woman wanted her to lay it on her stomach- so she does.  She wanted to rub her hands over it-so she does.  She immediately calmed down.  A nurse came in with a piece of chocolate cake ( which is a daily treat) and the woman didn’t want it just then.  She wanted to keep touching and holding the painting.  So she did. She rubbed it and my friend prayed with her and talked to her and she said to me on the phone , “Donna-seeing that picture calmed that woman right down.”  I heard my friend’s excitement and it was amazing to hear that God had taken a painting and calmed her spirit.  Only the power of the Holy Spirit can do something like that!  GLORY! GLORY! GLORY!

Another lady, who can’t see well, expressed her joy over being able to see it and she thanked my friend for bringing it, and for it being big and bright and bold!

God is in the details-right down to the last drop of paint.

…and then there are the kids who saw it…but I will save that for another post….

I guess I better get busy…

Today, I thank my GOD that He has used these paintings to touch the hearts of His children everywhere.  I praise HIM for using me to help bring a little joy and color, light and life, into other people’s hearts!  Tonight, my heart rejoices that God used this painting to calm a soul and help another to see.  GLORY!  Today she saw God in color, shape, line and prayer.   You just never know what God is going to do next…and I sit on the edge of my seat in anticipation….

Trust, honor and obey.  Those are the words in my heart this week.  When we trust God-we obey and when we put these two together it brings Him honor and glory!

The Spirit Lives

Day 4 of P & P

I confess- I did not paint today BUT I did pray!  Praise God!   Some of the paintings I had previously done have been busy at work today!   ( More on that in the next post!!)

The bible says we are to speak blessings into the world.  It is something that I am passionate about.  Each day that passes teaches me how to do it a little more and a little bit better.   We do this using by words, actions, and even in paintings.  When I paint something using colors that are vibrant and bright and catch the eye- it speaks a blessing of light and life into the world.  I paint using the colors of the rainbow and I teach the kids that when we use those colors we are painting “God’s promises” into the atmosphere.  He gave us the colors to use and the breath to represent Him and we can do it with each stroke and every word that we breath out into the world.  Painting can give us a vision of the future.  It can show us who we are now and who we can become.  It helps us to see things with new eyes….

Let me share a story with you.

In 2009 ( the beginning of this art ministry)  I was asked to do a drawing for Flat Rock UMC.  This beautiful little church had been through a lot of turmoil and had been on the brink of closing.  Some of the church members did not want to see that happen so they pursued keeping it open and GLORY TO GOD that they did!   When I met them, I fell in love with them, their story,  and with Flat Rock.

Matt. 16:18

Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

As you can see, it is built on a rock!

In 2009 it became a preaching station- open, but not every Sunday.

It was Homecoming weekend and the speaker was preaching on Lazarus and I was drawing.

All I could “see” was the church in it’s resurrected state- the grave clothes coming off and new life coming up-doors open and Jesus standing in the door with open arms, saying” Welcome Home.”   God was urging me to draw a picture of HOPE.   So that’s what I did.

Flat Rock drawing 2

I saw Lazarus standing before me.  I love the story of Lazarus-don’t you?  I see myself in the story.  Like Lazarus,  God has gently unwrapped me over the years.  I also saw this church being unwrapped.

Today I returned to Flat Rock and once again God met me there just as He did 4 years ago.  He reminded me of the work that He has done there.  He also reminded me of the minute, tiny, little role that He gave me in that work and that my work is far from being done.

I am an artist commissioned by God.  He asked me give the people a vision then, and today He is saying the same thing, only it seems much louder and more passionate.

He knew exactly what I needed to hear and see.  To keep my eyes on Him.  To not turn right or left and to keep walking into the destiny before me.

Draw near to GOD and He will draw near to you. James 4:8

I will be honest, the work that he has given me to do seems crazy and there are days that I say, “really God?  You want me to do what?”  He responds with a “follow me” and I say,  oh yeah, THAT!”  LOL  He has given me vision to see beyond the here and now and He has told me to share it-no matter how crazy it seems or feels. Just do it ( as Nike says…)

Four years ago, I was led by the HS to give a new perspective through the Word of God, a pencil, a piece of chalk and a passion to make the invisible God VISIBLE!

I had forgotten and He knew it.  I had been feeling a pull to go there all week and today I finally did.

When I walked through the doors of that little church, I was reminded of that time four years ago.   It was a time of hearing God’s calling, and acknowledging it.   Four years ago I cried my heart out to God about what He was asking me to do.  I spent time under that cross in the yard and walking the top of that mountain, praying and reading scripture out loud.  It was the beginning of many things…preaching and drawing and much more…things that only God could see.  It’s good to remember from time to time and I thank God for calling me back to that mountain top today.

Just as I have risen to meet my destiny,  Flat Rock has risen to meet hers.  Today her steeple rises high and proud in the bright blue sky and her doors are open for ministry.

For that, I am ever so grateful and thankful to the God of RESURRECTION POWER !  Jehovah Rapha!  The God of Healing and New Life!

We serve THE LIVING GOD who brings dead things to LIFE!  Churches and people!

This weekend there will be a wedding there…I can’t think of a better way to celebrate God’s covenant love can you?

Jesus really IS standing in the doorway and He is saying, “ Welcome Home Friends, Welcome Home…”

“ Come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest…”  Matt. 11:28

Flat Rock Chalk

The kids did this as they watched…

they are a living testimony to a church that has RISEN to meet it’s purpose!

Thanks be to God…

Flat Rock Kids pic

Flat Rock is a wonderful place to catch a fresh breath of air  ( you better hang onto your hat!)  and to set your vision on God.  If you get a chance in your travels- take a ride to Flat Rock.  Walk around her, talk to God and when you look off in the distance -you will see heaven.   It’s a special spot- you’ll see what I mean when you get there….

it’s a good place to turn around…

stay tuned for the rest of the story…..

Day 3- Caleb Taylor

Hi!  I got this sweet piece of art from our “son” Caleb Taylor today.  Caleb and Corynn have been friends for a long time and he is like her big bro!  I was so tickled that he took the challenge to create!   Caleb is a dear family friend who is in college and we don’t get to see him very much these days.  He is the worship leader at the Wesley House in Radford, Va..  He also plays in the worship band at Out of the Box Worship Center and at Hillsville First United Methodist Church.  He is a musical genius with an amazing anointing on his life!  He plays with passion and there isn’t anything he can’t play!  ( or draw, or paint…) LOL

Calebs Jesus

Here are a few other things he has done over the years…

Thanks Caleb!  Love your work and your heart for GOD-it’s burning hot!
