Don’t Quit

Brenda Harmon shared this with me today.

Her words were this:  DON’T QUIT.

God has used people like Brenda to move me out of my comfort zone-just as the coach is doing to Brock.    Listen to the words that the coach is speaking into Brock’s spirit.   The Coach see’s Brock as a leader, but Brock doesn’t see himself as one.

Listen to what he says…

What is God doing in your life? Is he talking to you about moving forward, away from your zone of comfort? If He is- then change your focus and what you are hearing in your head and fully rely on God.  God is right there with you. He sends us the Holy Spirit as our teacher, comforter and coach.   He resides in the deep places of our being.  He is our strength and song, our victory!   Whatever God is asking of you- BELIEVE IN HIS POWER TO WORK THROUGH YOU.  The HS is the coach and you are Brock.  You got this!

Thanks Brenda-I love you!

We are called to live life EMPOWERED.

We do this when we call on the Holy Spirit to equip our every need.

It requires belief.

This is a picture of the Holy Spirit falling upon my church. The dove comes from above and the steeple is wrapped with a scarlet ribbon. The Spirit of Truth. It could be any church, anywhere, but for now it’s my church. When I say “church” I am speaking of the people there-not the building. I only use the steeple as a representation in the art piece, or a point of contact, for the HS to flow through every person in the church.

Can I just tell you how much I love these people?  There aren’t enough words, not enough colors or enough music notes to sing them my love song.  Why do I love them so?  Because they love the One who loved us first.   Jesus Christ.

I’ll be leaving soon and it will be hard.  It’s already hard.  But I know these folks will be lifting me up in prayer, just as I have heard them pray for other Pastors who have been called out of this congregation.   This is the hardest thing I have ever done.  It is like eating a lemon and then taking a spoonful of sugar-together it is delicious, but apart from each other it is bittersweet.

I’m looking forward to the next leg of my journey with God.  I am anxious and a little scared, but sooo excited!  God will be increasing my church family and I will have many new people to get to know and love.I know that the Holy Spirit will equip me with what I need and when I need it.     Scripture promises us that tidbit of Truth.

John 6:63

63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life.

Did you hear that? God’s Words are FULL of Spirit and life!!!!!!!

John 14:15-17

“If you love me, you will obey my commandments. 16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper who will be with you forever. 17 That helper is the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it doesn’t see or know him. You know him, because he lives with you and will be in you.

He WILL give me another helper who will be with me FOREVER!

John 14:26

26 However, the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything. He will remind you of everything that I have ever told you.

And that HELPER will TEACH me EVERYTHING!  Isn’t this exciting?

John 16:13-15

13 When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into the full truth. He won’t speak on his own. He will speak what he hears and will tell you about things to come. 14 He will give me glory, because he will tell you what I say.15 Everything the Father says is also what I say. That is why I said, ‘He will take what I say and tell it to you.’

Jesus will be whispering in my ear ( or yours) through my helper-the Holy Spirit….

Is God calling YOU to do something uncomfortable?  Right here is your promise of HELP!

All of God’s Creation is sprinkled with His beautiful, life giving WORD.  His Word is like a whirlwind all around us-but do we see it?

Not with human eyes.  But we can with spiritual eyes!

heavens rays

I’m reading about Pentecost and what happened that day and I was stopped by these words from Acts 2:2…

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

The Holy Spirit was enabling the disciples by giving them life ( empowerment) to do God’s work.   He “brought them to life” or “lit a fire inside of them…”

Scripture from John 6:63 says this:

“ Life is spiritual. Your physical existence doesn’t contribute to that life. The words that I have spoken to you are spiritual. They are life.”

God’s Word = Life.

It takes breath to speak words.  God SPOKE creation into existence.  The earth came to LIFE through the very words of God.  His breath gives us life.  He is the giver of life and gifts.

John 16: 12 says this:  ( Jesus is speaking to the discples)

“I have a lot more to tell you, but that would be too much for you now. When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into the full truth.”

Key words:

WHEN the Spirit of Truth comes.  ( not if…WHEN!)

He WILL guide you   ( he will do what he says if you will receive it)

into the FULL truth.  ( ALL of it)

The Holy Spirit brings us WORDS from GOD.  He leaves us with a deposit of Truth and Power through the Holy Spirit, and when we are receptive to it and we believingly accept God’s gift of truth-the world won’t be the same!  We must not be afraid of it.  God only wants what is good for us!  When the disciples accepted their gift they went out into the world and spent their lives starting and building up the church. The world has been in a whirlwind ever since.

So, let’s go out and build UP the church and her people with Words of Life, Light and Truth.

God’s grace abounds-just take a look around.

Come, Holy Spirit, Come.  Live inside of me and light a fire in my heart for Jesus Christ.  Fill me with your fiery passion-blow your Truth into my lungs so that your words become mine.   Bring me back to life.  Arise inside of me like a whirlwind…

Here I am…

The 9:01 Experience

This past weekend I heard “Running Ever After’” play at State Street UMC in Bristol, VA..  They played for their youth rally and the contemporary worship service called “The 9:01 Experience.”    I love that name because it is different. Most times are 9 am or 11 am, but this one is 9:01 with the added EXPERIENCE and now I know why!

State Street UMC is filled with very gracious and friendly people.  Right away, as a stranger,  I EXPERIENCED the gifts of hospitality, generosity, kindness, mercy and grace in action.  I was made to feel right at home!   My time there was a real blessing because these folks are putting their God-given gifts to use!  Thank you State Street UMC, you blessed my soul!   You are pointed at True North!

I was told that this church started out in this little chapel, years ago, and that has left me greatly encouraged. Today the chapel can fit inside of the rest of this church several times!  Here are some stained glass windows from the little chapel.

I love this prayer chapel window because this woman is clinging to the cross as she kneels on the rocky cliffs near the ocean.  It speaks of our Savior.  Mine, yours and the people at State Street UMC.  The preacher spoke about how we are the Body of Christ…you, me, your neighbor, these folks and all other Believers across this great earth.

I love seeing Jesus as Our Shepherd. He carries the young, the broken and the bruised. He watches over the rest of the flock WHILE caring for the hurting and the healing. He guides and leads us down paths of righteousness.

My young friend, Elizabeth shared with me that she is fond of this window because the children were gathered around Jesus.  ( right we belong!)

Look at those smiles!  A joyful worship service!  Woot! Woot!

Running Ever After plays their music for the glory of the Lord and it shows. They are part of the Body of Christ putting their God-given gifts to work. They focus on the One True God- Jesus Christ. They put the cross before them in all that they do and it shows.

Brandon and Caleb

Zach is usually behind the drums and it’s hard to get his photo-but this time he was feeling led to give a testimony and he was at the microphone!  Awesome job of listening to the Holy Spirit Zach!  You are a natural speaker!

Jerry-our adopted roadie

The music these young people play draws people closer to God.  God speaks through their instruments.  It is an energizing experience to worship with them.  Why?  Because they are plugged in to the source of their power !!   Are you? I hope so!

Evan was the speaker at the youth rally and he preached to us about being REAL!

Thanks Evan- God was using you as affirmation to what I ,too, have been hearing.  To be an AUTHENTIC follower of Christ.  Being a leader for God requires authenticity and a passion for Christ.  This is what I love about these young people- there’s nothing fake here.

What you see is exactly what you get.

Our future leaders…they are soaking it all up and I thank God every single day for the testimony that our young adults are giving to these younger kids.  ( Jerry is sitting in between the young ones-what does that tell you?)  They look up to you…because you don’t look down on them!

1 Timothy 4:12  Don’t let anyone look down on you for being young. Instead, make your speech, behavior, love, faith, and purity an example for other believers.

You do this well!

So, thanks for being real and keeping it True.

I can’t wait to see where God is going to take you next!    Thanks for all you do and for who you ARE!  State St. UMC- thank YOU!

My unforgiveness had  been keeping me locked up. It kept me bound me into a position where I couldn’t move forward or backward.  I was just stuck.  Being stuck is no fun.  God couldn’t and wouldn’t move in my life.

Scripture says:

Matthew 6:14

For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

I said to myself, “ If I truly love God- I will do for others what he did for me.  If I am an AUTHENTIC woman of God then I will do the right thing.  There will be no question as to who I am and who I love.  And if I really love God, I won’t wait.  I won’t make excuses and I won’t run away anymore. “    God didn’t wait until I went first-he just did it.  God didn’t make excuses as to why he couldn’t do it-he just did it.  He walked the way of love.  I should too.  No excuses, no whining, no looking back.  I am called to FOLLOW HIM in all my ways and specifically this way-the way of forgiveness.

What about you?

The MESSAGE version puts Matthew 6:14  this way: “In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can’t get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others. If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God’s part.”

My unforgiveness had cut me off from God.  Ouch!

Let me share a personal testimony with you…I’m not going to go into all the details we don’t have time for that.  But what I will share with you is that I was very angry at a lot of people for different reasons, reasons that I thought were important.  Ha!  They weren’t.  ( You know- it is the stuff that we don’t share that should be shared-it’s the hard stuff, like this, that we should be talking about because I see how my own struggle with people and issues  could possibly help another person to move forward. )

Well, I stayed mad for quite awhile and thought I was over it-but I wasn’t really.  In December-during a worship song at church- we sang the words, “ Create in me a clean heart, O Lord” and my heart fell apart.  I stood there with my arms lifted high and envisioned God pouring His blood over me.  I saw it, felt it and experienced it.  In those moments I began moving forward one small step at a time.

Shortly after that-in January-I began a fast.  During that fast I had some serious face time with God.  I realized I was harboring unforgiveness in many areas.  That fast changed my spiritual life because God was answering my prayer through that song- “Create in me a clean heart o God.”  This is one of the reasons why I think our time of worship is so very important-we aren’t just singing for the sake of singing- we are worshipping our heavenly Father with the very breath that he put into our lungs and that breath should be uplifting, not downcast. Our very life should be an act of worship and if we harbor an unforgiving spirit then we are not worshipping God.

Once I went through the process of being on my knees and seeking forgiveness I began to move forward.  The door opened for ministry.  I didn’t know where, but it was opened.  A month or so went by and I felt like I was called to do a 40 day fast.  So I started.  In this fast I realized I had one more thing to do- to write a letter to someone asking for forgiveness.  As I look back today I see it all so clearly now.   God was showing me the way I needed to go-deeper.

Do you see it?

The unforgiveness was keeping me locked into a position of going around and around that mountain over and over again.  I even asked myself why I kept going around the same old mountain.  It was like I was blind to it.  I was. Now I see.  Oh so clearly.  Thank the Lord!

Before I could go THROUGH the door of ministry I had to go deeper with God in offering my forgiveness and in seeking it.   If I am to be a representative of Christ-then I must let go and let God.  Today, I have gone over the mountain and I see the beautiful work of the hands of my Father and I will tell the world!  Wow.  What release and freedom! I was keeping myself from moving forward when all it took was my humbling myself and making things right between myself and others.

It’s so simple folks.  We make it so hard.  During all of this I was saying, “ but they did that, they said this and I want this, and that’s just not right and this is how I see things and I want, I want, I want.”  I never said, “what does God want?”

God wants us to make things right with people ( no matter what we might think)  so that He can get on with the work he has planned for us as individuals and as the Body of Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:16-20

God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. We’re Christ’s representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God’s work of making things right between them. We’re speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he’s already a friend with you.

When we do make things right-God will move in your life in a mighty, mighty way.  Isn’t that exciting?  I am a testament to that because I believe that had I not listened to the Spirit of God-I’d still be stuck, the door would still be closed and I’d still be going around that mountain.  Instead- I listened, I prayed, I acted, and God responded in a mighty, mighty way!   He has opened the door of ministry and I have joyfully walked through it!

So, let me encourage YOU to grab onto the JOY and FREEDOM that God has planned for your life!  But first- you have to let go of the chains of unforgiveness.   They are so heavy and quite often we don’t even know we are wearing them until we drop them to the floor.  I pray that you will drop whatever it is you are holding onto and never pick it back up.  Relief is near.  Satan is the one who keeps us locked up with his stinkin’ thinkin’ and his repetitive taunts.  We fall for it.  He’s a bully and he wants to keep us down.  He does not want to see the Kingdom of God prosper.  But you know what? Our God is alive and well and He is with us wherever we go!  Joshua 1:9 “I have commanded you, ‘Be strong and courageous! Don’t tremble or be terrified, because the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.’ ” We have to take a hold of that Truth and live it like we believe it!  I pray that you do and I am anxious to see what God is going to do through YOU!

Looking Forward

Yesterday Cort asked me if I saw any grass peeking through all of the straw that is covering our front yard.  I said, “ no silly, it hasn’t had enough time to germinate and take root.”

Last night at our council meeting time of celebrations I was reminded of Cort’s words.  “ Do you see any grass poking up yet?”   My answer in regards to our meeting was “YES.”

Today I was reminded that our plans are not God’s and that His ways are higher than ours.

Isaiah 55:8 “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.

16 months ago our church commissioned a group of people to serve as missionaries to downtown Hillsville.  Our church has been busy planting seeds all this time.   There has been much labor involved in the planting of these seeds.  Each seed is a life.  Our church has some awesome seed sowers and what is coming up today is a result of their work, their feeding,  and their faith in God to water the ground.  Last night I saw the grass peeking through the straw.

Luke 8:15  And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest.

I know that when the grass starts coming up in my yard, we will be happy, no more dirt and mud!  It’s the same way when we see the efforts of our hard work coming to fruition in other people ( seeds).  They are clearing away their own mud and dirt so that the seed can take root and grow healthy and strong.  These things take time.

God’s time, not ours.

This past weekend one of these seeds ( a person) came to life and worked to bring other people together to do the Lord’s work in the community.  Seeds were sown, friendships were formed and people were fed spiritually, physically and mentally.  Prayer, hope and encouragement were on the menu.  Some needs were shared.  ( Little did we know God had those needs already taken care of through our church.)

We celebrated these joys during our council meeting.  This morning I realized that all the work that has been done in years past is now producing a major fruit crop.  I’m not talking about just the past 16 months, but the past 16 years too.  The group of people who were sent out had previously been tended and cared for by all the shepherds of the church.  There has been much fruit in many forms, and communities near and far, are being changed because of your hard work, diligence, prayers and patience.   I thank God for each of you.

Ephesians 3:14-19

14 When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father,[e] 15 the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.[f] 16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. 17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

You know, today I have been thinking about how much time we have, right now, to spend with our oldest daughter before she goes off to college-not long.  I want to do everything I can to spend as much time with her as possible.  Time is going by so fast!  I feel the same way about the church.  I will be leaving in 2 months to plant seeds elsewhere and I want to spend as much time as I possibly can with my church family- who has fed and watered me for 6 years!  Oh, I know I’m not going far-but it will be a change.  My role will change, just as my daughter’s will.  Change is never easy-it stretches us and makes us grow in ways that we never would have imagined.  Change is good and I am doing all that I can to embrace the plans that God has for this family.  We have come so far in such a short period of time and it is all because of the faithfulness of our church.  You have been faithful to speak the Truth into us and to do it in love.  You have fed and watered us and today we are peeking through the grass seeking the Son so that we might grow every higher towards Him.  That’s what growth does.  It makes you hungry for more.  Our church has been serving a lot of hungry people -so you better get ready and make room for more!

Luke 10:2“The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.

Today I am praying for all of us to prepare for a feast in the Kingdom of God!   “Let us go  quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.  Let us fill the banquet hall!  Let us go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone we find to come, so that the house will be full.”  ( Luke 14:15-24)   Let us not make excuses and let us look forward with joyful anticipation!

Grandpa Rocks it with a homemade cajon

A month or so ago I asked my Dad if he could make Corynn a cajon.  A cajon is box drum that you sit on and beat with your hands.  It takes a special touch and training to learn how to get the right sounds and I am anxious to hear what Corynn can do with it!

This is the result of my Dad’s hand’s and research!

( No one else will have one like this!!!!)

My Dad said he had trouble finding the 1/8” wood for the front-so he took a piece of poplar and planed it out to the right size!  This is why my Dad rocks!  It’s beautiful!

cajon drum 004

He left it plain ( no varnish or stain)so that Corynn can decorate it herself!

( I know she will!)

Thanks Grandpa-you rock!

Love you!

Now watch this Gramps and learn this song on your banjo so you can play with the band!

This week’s projects and insights

My barn wood star wrapped with barbed wire and a heart sitting in a new bed of mulch and dainty little blue flowers that my mother gave me from home.  This is the first year that they have looked this good!  I used the old barn wood that Pastor Ty gave me to make a border to hold the mulch in place.

My Bradford Pear tree has gotten ginormous this year- my fav place to sit a spell!  As soon as the grass sprouts our chairs will be parked here and we can have some lemonade.  I have a feeling that we will get some dog days this year!

The two rocks to the right are shaped like little seats on the top.  Cute for the kids to pop a squat!  LOL

My faithful companion, Trouble, always beside me while I work outside, inside and am snoring on the couch.  ( me AND him-only he’s on the floor!)

Another project with a new 4 x 4 border, mulch, and hostas that I replanted.  2 weeks ago this was nothing but weeds!!

The enormous task that we have been working away at for months.  It is finally coming to completion.  Rocks, dirt, seed, lime, hay and now a little rain would be good!  Phew.

A little more to go.  Gotta go get about 6 more bales of hay.  I am turning into a hay monster.  Smile  I’ve been thinking about my farming friends back home a lot this week.  They are preparing the soil for planting with Big Bertha!  ( That’s the name of their tractor!)

These all came out of our yard!

Last fall I put my hostas in the woods-they love it here!

This is next weeks project.  God is using this time to prepare me for my new ministry.  My mind is on planting, seeds, soil, types of soil, and PATIENCE!

Next week’s project will more than likely teach me about persistence and repetition.  This soil is very rocky, hard and like a desert.  ( and it’s BEEN tilled up!)  This is where the perseverance comes in…  if you look closely-there is new life growing between the stony stuff!  This is proof that God never gives up-no matter how hard the heart!

My heart has been fueled this week.  Thank you Lord, for the seed, the fertilizer and the nourishment that only YOU can bring!  I love you…

The emergence of life-one glorious day at a time…

isn’t GOD amazing?

Our body is a temple

We all have our struggles with addictions and mine is with food.  A group of us are doing a bible study that is based around craving God and not food.  Last night during the “Made to Crave” bible study we were discussing our bodies being temples-the place where God dwells.  Our discussion revolved around food and if what we were putting into our “temples” was beneficial or not.

This morning I had an eye opener in the scriptures.  Let’s look at…

Matthew 21: 12-13 (NIV)

Jesus went straight to the Temple and threw out everyone who had set up shop, buying and selling. He kicked over the tables of loan sharks and the stalls of dove merchants. He quoted this text: My house was designated a house of prayer;
You have made it a hangout for thieves.

When Jesus found out that people were buying and selling their wares in the Temple of God- he got angry!   This was a special place, a place of reverence and honor.  A place where people gathered to learn about his Father in Heaven.  Wouldn’t that make you mad too?  It should.  What did he do?   He made a whip and he drove them out of the temple!  The temple is a holy place-not one where we do business, make loans or sell things.  It is a place of HONOR.  It is a house of prayer, a Holy place.  Our bodies are the same exact way folks.  We don’t sell, loan out or make our bodies available to thieves.  Do we?  We shouldn’t.  The Holy Spirit lives inside of us and we are called to HONOR God with our bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

What does the word HONOR mean?

Think about those words.  Who do you respect and revere and WHY?

How about INTEGRITY?

Having morals, ethics and honesty.

Do you know anyone like this?

I do.

It’s Jesus Christ, the One who was born of a virgin, the One who came to live among us, the One who served others with His lifeblood, the One who was crucified, kicked, mocked and whipped.  The ONE who ROSE in VICTORY, the ONE who IS coming back!

Sisters, we need to get mad.  We need to get our whips out and send the devil and his temptations packing all the way back to hell.  Our bodies are the temple of the LIVING God-not the temple for chips and dip, pizza, popcorn and chocolate covered bunnies filled with ice cream.  Until I get real with myself, my temple will always be in disarray.  Is this what we want?  Or do we want a magnificent, radiant temple that is filled with the foods of the earth-unprocessed, un refined and with no additives?  I am afraid that until I get seriously angry things will never change.  Satan is feeding us lies and we are selling our souls to him.

There is a song called “Give us clean hearts”

Here are the words…

We bow our hearts  ( our bodies should be a house of prayer)
We bend our knees ( we are in constant prayer in our temple)
Oh Spirit come make us humble  ( !!)
We turn our eyes   ( stop looking at food)
From evil things ( start looking at God)
Oh Lord we cast down our idols  ( we tell the food to GET OUT)
So give us clean hands ( we wash ourselves with His WORD)
and give us pure hearts ( we meditate on our daily bread and the will of God)
Let us not lift our souls to another  ( we lift our souls to GOD and not the devil’s schemes)
Oh give us clean hands  ( we ask God for beneficial food to be prepared by our hands)
and give us pure hearts ( hearts that seek God first-the Lord is our portion-not food)
Let us not lift our souls to another
Oh God let this be
a generation that seeks
Who seeks Your face, Oh God of Jacob
Oh God let us be
a generation that seeks
Who seeks Your face, Oh God of Jacob

Let us seek the Face of God and not the bag of chips or container of dip, not the movie popcorn, pizza or ice cream filled chocolate Easter bunnies.  Let us seek the RADIANT, MAGNIFICENT FACE OF GOD ALMIGHTY in all that we do, all that we prepare and all that goes into our bodies.  Let us be ROMANS 12 people!  A HOLY and LIVING sacrifice to the God who SAVES!  THIS, my sisters, is HOW we WORSHIP!

Romans 12: 1-2  (NLT)

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.  Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

So, are you mad yet?

Will you get your whip out and send those temptations out the door of your heart?  Will you kick over that table of lust and idols that we call food?  Will you place a sentry over your heart so that thieves cannot get inside?   Will you change your way of thinking? What will you do, sisters?

Will you do what Jesus did?

I want to but I can’t do it alone.

We can do this-together!

In Phil 4:13 Paul says: “ I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13 For I can do everything through Christ,[c] who gives me strength. “

Let’s look to the Author and Perfecter of our faith for strength and not food.

We’ve got this ladies.

I love you ALL so much!

I thank God for each and everyone of you.  Our time together has spoken volumes into my soul and I thank you for sharing and being so willing and open.  God always knows what we need and He knew I needed all of you!    Thank you Lord.
