Art Ministry News

Little DEE

Jesus tells us in Matthew 28:19 to go into the world and make disciples of all people.  He tells us to teach ALL people about who he is and then he tells us that he will always be with us-until the end of the age.  We are to GO and disciple them.  What does disciple mean?  It means to be a student.  We help people along the way do whatever it is they need doing.

three crosses follow me

So, how does art fit into this?  Well in a bible study I was taking several years ago I read a story of a man who had received Christ as his Lord and Savior after viewing the masterpiece by Rembrandt called the “Prodigal Son.”   Rembrandt used the gift that God gave him and he painted what he saw as the prodigal son and that led one soul to be saved in viewing it. To me this is a form of discipleship and using art to share God’s Word is the same as using music, teaching or preaching.   Art can be a powerful tool to reach people if it used properly.  When I was in college God used my Art History class to show me how powerful the gift of art can be when used to glorify God.  It was during these years that I started to feel like God was showing me how to use my art to glorify Him.  One night, as I was listening to a Pastor showing slides from his first trip to Israel, I began to feel a sense of purpose in my own work.   It was in these slides that I began to see how God has used and still uses art to touch lives all over the world.  I began studying the work of Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel and fell in love with it.  Oh to have known such a man as him!  What dedication and persistence it took to paint the ceiling while laying on his back all of those years!   I admire that greatly.  Hundreds of thousands of people have viewed his work and  have stood in awe and wonder under the magnificent muscular figures of the bible as they seem to “float” on the ceiling of the Chapel.  How many times has God’s story been told this way?  How many people have seen God in a new way?  How many hearts have fluttered with salvation?  Only God knows !

The Prodigal Son

It has become my greatest desire to help other people’s hearts embrace what God has in store for them.  I can do this using the gift that God gave me in art.  We are supposed to use our gifts to further God’s Kingdom and one of my goals for the Art Ministry is to for us to be mission minded.  Some people have asked me how can art be mission minded?  Well, let me share a few projects with you that our kids have created over the past several months.

Our mission team was preparing to go to Nicaragua to deliver shoes for kids there.  Did you know that most kids don’t have shoes to wear and that a lot of these children live in the dumps of the city and make their living picking through the trash?  Their feet get cut and infected and they get sick because they don’t have shoes to wear.  It’s just not healthy.  So, one of the things the Art ministry did was to decorate canvas shoes for the kids in Nicaragua.  They did a fantastic job of sharing God’s love on their shoes through their drawings and scripture verses.  Each pair was prayed over as they were creating their very own masterpieces.  I am blessed to be serving side by side with kids who care about their brothers and sisters in another country.

The shoes!

We also had some visitors from Georgia and these people have been a terrific source of encouragement, advice, and prayer warriors here at OOTBWC and OOTB Youth center.  The idea for the youth center actually came from a visit to their church in Macon, GA..  So, we wanted to share the joy and the kids made this 3’ x 4’ splatter painted cross to give them as a gift.  Oh the fun they had!  At the same time we wanted to send the church in Nicaragua the same thing.  So we made two!  The one for Nica had to be smaller to get it into a carry on bag.  If I had it my way I would have made it as huge as possible!  But the baggage cost was just too much .  ( and since then I have come with an idea of how to get a really big one over there!!!!)

Every splattered color represents a person, a gift, a talent.  When we were doing these they were pretty messy and the kids didn’t think they’d come out too pretty.  But much to their surprise after pulling off all the paper and tape what was revealed was much more than a mess-it was a beautiful mess!   It’s like that with us too-we can be messy until God reveals His beauty within us.

The  NICA team posted a blog today and here is what they said about the gift of the cross to the church: “Today (Tuesday) we are having communion in Nueva Vida with pastor Berman. We invited him to eat supper with us at our house last night. Afterwards himself, Jose Luis (the baker) and Erwin (Youth leader) all shared their testimonies with our group. The kept saying over and over how many groups come to Nueva Vida – but ours was different because we actually wanted to learn about them. Not just play with the kids and goof off. We were genuinely interested in their stories and we had so much love for Nueva Vida. He couldn’t believe it was everyone’s first time!!! We gave them the painting and told them to remember that we are going back to the states on Wednesday, but they are always in our hearts. We are so thankful to know them, they have blessed us, and that every time they look at the painting – they can remember our love for them. They were SO thankful for the painting.. he said it’s the first real thing like that they have to hang up in their church. Everything is bare. After that he invited us to share “Holy Lunch” with them tomorrow… communion. What an honor. We’re excited.”

Wow! I’m excited too!  It is an honor to work for God.  I have some other community service projects being lined up…things like taking decorated bags filled with goodies to nursing home residents and going into the hospital with drawing pads, pencils, and markers for kids who are recovering from surgeries and illnesses.    I will have more information on that as time goes on.  I would like to say that I am so thankful for the families that are involved in this ministry and for their kids beautiful hands , hearts and joyful faces!    Thanks to all the parents who participate and take the time to bring your kids out to play with me!  I love each and everyone of them and I can’t wait until our next project!

( not all the kids are pictured here)

From our hands and hearts……here in Virginia….

to their hands and hearts in at Nueva Vida in Nicaragua….my heart is humbled.

Thank you Lord for this amazing opportunity and for this ministry.  I pray that we always give you the glory forever and ever.  I love you,  my big amazing magnificent Papa, and it is because of your love for me that I am able to love these people and call them family!

We love our NICA family!

Thanks kids-you’re the bestest!!!!

Keep looking and keep drawing!

Music from Slovakia

Robo, Stela, Lenka and baby to be

This is a video recording of our Slovak translator, Lenka, and her sister, Kamile, singing a song for their Father. I copied the title into my Slovka-English translator and this is what came up for the title:  ” For me, the external courtyard”  I tried to find lyrics, with no luck.  I am sure Lenka will share the words with me soon!  I will add them here when she does.

I thought I would share it with you on this beautiful Monday morning.  God’s voice can be heard all over the world and I hear it in these two angels!

Thank you sisters!  Love you!

Blessings for your Monday!

Trees and barns

I love old barns and trees.  I took this photo several years ago and then edited it.

This barn used to be near Skyview Church and I’m not so sure if it’s still there.

Anyway- it’s a cool picture.

There’s a message here somewhere…what do you see?

Inside Out Worship

Psalm 95:6-7

So come, let us worship: bow before him,
on your knees before God, who made us!
Oh yes, he’s our God,
and we’re the people he pastures, the flock he feeds.

In Psalm 95 we hear the Psalmist calling us to worship and just as the Psalmist beckons us to worship the God who created us, this morning the Holy Spirit was passionately present in our worship services.  The HS was stirring hearts to come ever closer to God through music, song, and the dancing bare feet of little children.   ( I thought about all of those little feet in Nicaragua that are waiting for shoes…)

John 4:23-24 (MSG)

23-24“It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself—Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.”

God is to be praised with joy and delight and in thankfulness.  It’s not a show and it’s true worship that comes straight from the heart.  God placed it there from the beginning of time.  Do you believe that?  I do.  I never thought I would be one to raise my hands and sing out during worship, but I am becoming more and more like what God had planned and planted there long ago.  I want to be like a tree that bends in the wind- firmly rooted in Christ and arms lifted high in worship, swaying to the sound of the Holy Spirit weaving in and out of each worshipper that is present.   Have you ever looked at trees?  I mean really looked at them?  Their limbs are constantly reaching for the sky in beautiful praise and adoration to their Creator.  So, you might think I’m a little fruity-but I don’t care because that’s one of the characteristics of trees that I see.  I love trees!    I think that all of creation praises God in unison everyday and that is how God wants us to be.  Each singing to the tune that The Creator placed in our hearts-singing to Him, for Him and about Him!   It is an act of adoration.

I felt that this morning.  I saw 2 year old Zoe running to the stage, her little frilly white and pink dress bouncing along behind her.  Her feet were bare and beautiful as she ran and   jumped; twirling, spinning and just doing her own thing to the tune in her heart.  She finally  plopped herself down on the carpet right in front of Jay and she laid down on her back, little feet swinging in the air.   She just laid there mesmerized by the music and the sound of people worshipping their Creator.  As I watched her I wondered what she saw in her little mind and then I saw Jay looking down at her, just grinning, and I thought, “ WOW!  That’s how God looks down on us as He sees us in worship!  He is grinning and singing with us!”   It sort of stunned me as I watched the scene unfolding in my mind.    I saw Jay as my Papa and Zoe as me.   This is how God sees each of us!  He is singing blessings over our lives, songs of goodness, grace, hope and joy.  His song is beautiful, everlasting and prompting each of us to worship Him with our lives-to the fullest!  Some will lie down and worship like little Zoe and some will play, jump and dance around while others will just sit and breathe-taking in the wonder of it all.  It doesn’t matter how  or where you are when you worship just as long as you do it!

Hebrews 10:22-25

22-25So let’s do it—full of belief, confident that we’re presentable inside and out. Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word. Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.

This morning I was turned inside out.  I have been feeling a little out of focus in the past several weeks and today God showed me what it is that He wants.  He wants me to worship Him with my whole life.  With my actions,  my deeds, my words, my art,  my love, my faith , my study,  and with all of my heart and soul.  He wants ME.  Not part of me, but all of ME.  He wants you too.  We have many amazing opportunities, right before us, to help our neighbors and to get out into our community and serve others.  God wants our all and He has given each of us gifts to use to do the work and to worship Him while we do it.  All we have to do is BELIEVE.  God will do the rest.  I’ve got to stop doubting and start believing.   I’ve got to live in the wonder and awe of a 2 year old.

Romans 10:15

“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”

Thank you Lord, for children who freely worship you and for the beautiful bare feet of those who bring the Good news with their true and pure worship…thank you for little Zoe, Samuel, Judah, Christoper, Victoria, Casey, Jacob, Chase and all the other children you have planned to bring into your fold in the coming weeks and months.  As our team is in  Nicaragua doing the work you have called them to, I believe you are calling others to do that same work in the mission field right here in Carroll County.  As Pastor Ronnie said there are children right around us who don’t know who Jesus is.  So, I am taking this moment to pray for those children to come to VBS, to visit our church, or another church, so they can hear the story about the ONE who loves them.   School will be starting and there are children in our schools in need of food, clothing, shoes, supplies and love.  Help us to go out, find them and share what we have with them-the everlasting love of our Papa.  Shoebox season will be upon us soon and I pray over all the boxes that will be collected and the lives that will be touched by the love that is in the shoebox.  The world is our mission field and I ask that you give us the belief to go out and do what you have planned for us to do.  Jeremiah 29:11 says “ For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

A hope and a future.  We all have one.

Now let’s go tell the ones who don’t know!

Thank you Lord for what you have shown me today.  I love how you work and how you speak to each of us differently.  Thank you for the gifts you have given Jay, Brandon, Justin, & Caleb. Wow!  I have been blessed!  I love you Lord!

Please be with our Nica Team and all the children that they are reaching.  I pray for their feet to go out and share the Good News that has been brought to them through this team.  I pray for the joy of the children to come back with our team and be spread all around Carroll County, Virginia, and the world.  You truly do know the plans for each team member and I believe they will take what they have learned and apply it to every area of their lives, wherever they go, for the rest of their days on this earth.  Thank you for the beautiful feet that spread your goodness everywhere.  Please keep them safe as they finish their last few days and begin traveling home.  It seems like forever that they have been gone, yet it’s only been a few days.  Let them know that they are loved and missed by all!  Blessing for the journey!

Grace and peace to all who read this and may God touch your heart in a new way in the week to come.

Praying for the NICA team

Prayer card

I just finished reading today’s post from the NICA team.  It included photos.  I noted how joyful and beautiful “our Wendy” looked in the photos with her little girl.  Wow.  Transformation is taking place from the inside out!  Amazing!    I can’t wait to hear more from Wendy and see her photo’s!

We miss you all and are praying for you everyday!

1 Thess. 5:17-18 “Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.”

These kids are living out God’s Truth!   ….sigh….there are no words….
