Pulling Taffy

I love taffy and as a child I loved to go to the State Fair in Syracuse, NY and watch the taffy pulling machines at work.  It is sort of mesmerizing.

I have been feeling a bit like a piece of taffy on a taffy puller.  Have you ever seen one of those machines?

Let me show you.taffy 2

Here are some facts about taffy pulling:  First you have to mix the ingredients, (sugar, corn syrup, and water) together and boil the sugar until it is dissolved.    It has to be boiled to a certain temperature to get the desired effect of the candy.  If it is too hot or cool it will be harder to work with.  So temperature  ( 270 degrees) is imperative to the taffy making process.  Once it is cooked and removed from the heat you then add the coloring to it.  It is important to keep the taffy warm and not let it cool. Once it is cooled it is hard to work with.   Then it gets turned out onto a marble slab where it is turned and scraped with a metal spatula to prepare it for pulling and twisting into shape.  Some people do this step by hand and others use a machine such as the one above.  The twisting process includes folding, bending, twisting and shaping.  All this twisting and shaping makes the taffy change color and this is how it gets it firm consistency for eating.  Once the pulling is complete the taffy is cut into bite size pieces and wrapped, ready to eat! Yum!

God has been doing this with me.  Reaching, pulling, shaping, mending, molding, twisting, tweaking, breaking and bringing me to my knees.

Why?  Because He created me IN HIS IMAGE, to be sweet, soft, completed and wrapped up in Him, just like the finished taffy.  He see’s that I am not finished yet and that I need even more pulling and stretching to become like Him.  The most amazing thing about this process is that I am now beginning to DESIRE that stretching and pulling.   I am beginning to understand why the Apostle Paul was so joyful, even in his awful surroundings of a prison cell.  I am beginning to understand the powerful message of  having a selfless love.  I am not perfect and never will be, and that doesn’t mean I am NOT going to strive for perfection, because that has become my life’s goal.  To be sweet and sticky, and all wrapped up, … ready to serve others.   I have failed and will continue to fail, that is just life.   When we do, we  must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and RUN like the wind toward Our Father in Heaven.  He is the wind under our wings, He is the power in our legs, He is the beat of our hearts, He is our all in all, the lover of our souls.   Once we really ” get” that message then we can run like the graceful deer in the field and share it with the rest of the world.

I recently received a sweet gift from a friend…guess what it was?

A little box of candy apple taffy!

She wrote a scripture on the box:

 Psalm 34:8 ( NIV)

 8 Taste and see that the LORD is good;
       blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

Psalm 34:8 (The Message)
 8 Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see—
         how good God is.
   Blessed are you who run to him.

Folks, God is soooooooo deliciously good!  May I encourage you to run with all that you have to your Father…you will be blessed!

Run and never look back…

May you willingly receive the blessings that God has poured out for you today,
