“Has your relationship with God changed the way you live your life?”
I recently watched Francis Chan on a video clip. In it he was riding a beat up old scooter. I mean it really looked used. But you know what? It didn’t matter, it ran and it got him where he needed to go. I was amused by it because my husband recently bought a used conversion van. It too, looks used and beat up. But you know what? It’s paid for and it will get us where we need to go. There is still a lot of life left in it. We are ALL used and abused in one way or another and there is still a lot of life left in us! I told my husband that I was going to call our new ride the Chan Van. haha! Francis Chan challenges me to think in a different way. Much the way that John Wesley thought as he wrote these words…
“Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can.”
Most people think that being debt free is nearly impossible. But I am here to tell you that it is NOT. We used to live on credit cards and credit. I would cringe when the mailman came. I hated going to the mailbox. Which credit card bill was there today? Then when it did come, I would try to hide it and pretend it wasn’t there, but it would always crop it’s ugly head up and over the box for me to deal with sooner or later, screaming, ” Here I am, don’t forget about me!” How could I at 18% interest with a $5000 balance? That seemed like Mt. Everest to me! We also had a 2 car payments and a mortgage, not to mention various other debts that were piling up, one by one.
The fights we would have over money were awful. We both were like ostriches, with our heads in the sand.
One day that all changed. We made a decision, together, to work on becoming debt free.
Now trust me, this was not an easy process for me. I loved the credit card, never used cash and would write checks up until the last penny.
Well, here it is, four years later and we have paid off all credit cards, two vehicles, our garage, and various other debts. All we have left is our mortgage. We are slowly chipping that away. It has taken a lot of prayer, patience, frustration, fighting, willingness, patience, frustration ( oh did I already say those things?) , more prayer and especially OBEDIENCE! My husband and I have done this as a team, including our children. We could not have done this without each other, but especially not without GOD. God put us here to be stewards of this earth and everything on it. Not just stewards, but GOOD stewards. To care for it, nurture it, feed it, love it. When we are bound by debt, we cannot be free to do those things. We worry, stress, fight, and work our fingers to the bone to pay for the debt that we have accrued.
Today, we think differently and we live differently. Our marriage is so much stronger because of what God has done in our lives. He has brought us together in the mess of bondage, and more importantly, He has gotten us THROUGH the mess and into what is really important! HIM! Being obedient to His Word. Being good stewards of what He has given us. After much persistence, patience and perseverence, today, we are able to live credit card free and we use cash for all of our purchases. So, don’t think you can’t do it, because if I can, anyone can! I won’t lie, it hasn’t been easy, but it has been SO WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Freedom is never FREE!
We have to live like no one else today, so we can live like no one else tomorrow!
Listen to Peter…
Jesus didn’t let Peter drown and He won’t let you drown either!
TRUST IN HIM!
1 Peter 1 (MSG)
A New Life
3-5What a God we have! And how fortunate we are to have him, this Father of our Master Jesus! Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven—and the future starts now! God is keeping careful watch over us and the future. The Day is coming when you’ll have it all—life healed and whole.
6-7I know how great this makes you feel, even though you have to put up with every kind of aggravation in the meantime. Pure gold put in the fire comes out of it proved pure; genuine faith put through this suffering comes out proved genuine. When Jesus wraps this all up, it’s your faith, not your gold, that God will have on display as evidence of his victory.
8-9You never saw him, yet you love him. You still don’t see him, yet you trust him—with laughter and singing.
Because you kept on believing, you’ll get what you’re looking forward to:
You can’t BUY that!
